How to Recognize Signs of Burnout

Stress is a normal part of life. Deadlines, family responsibilities, and unexpected challenges can all create tension. In short bursts, stress can even motivate us to get things done. But when stress becomes constant and unmanageable, it can develop into burnout — a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion that’s much harder to recover from.
At Redemption Wellness Services, we often see clients who didn’t realize they were approaching burnout until it hit them hard. Recognizing the early warning signs can help you take steps to protect your well-being before it reaches that point.
Stress vs. Burnout — What’s the Difference?
Stress often feels like you have “too much” on your plate — too many tasks, too many demands, too much pressure. Burnout, on the other hand, feels like you have nothing left — your energy, motivation, and emotional reserves are completely depleted.
Key difference: Stress might still allow you to see a way forward, while burnout makes you feel stuck and hopeless.
Signs Your Stress Might Be Turning Into Burnout
Constant Exhaustion
If no amount of rest seems to help, and you wake up feeling as drained as you did before bed, this could be a sign you’re moving from stress into burnout.
Loss of Motivation
Tasks you once enjoyed (or at least tolerated) now feel like a mountain you can’t climb. Even small responsibilities feel overwhelming.
Emotional Numbness or Detachment
You might notice yourself feeling emotionally flat, disconnected from others, or indifferent toward things that used to matter.
Physical Symptoms
Burnout often shows up in the body, leading to headaches, muscle tension, digestive issues, or frequent illnesses because of a weakened immune system.
Irritability and Negativity
You may feel more impatient, cynical, or resentful than usual. Small annoyances can trigger strong reactions.
How to Stop Burnout Before It Starts
Set Boundaries
Say “no” when your plate is already full. Protect your downtime as much as your work time.
Prioritize Self-Care
This isn’t just about bubble baths and candles (though those can help). It’s about making sure you eat well, move your body, get enough sleep, and engage in activities that bring joy.
Seek Support
Talk to a trusted friend, family member, or therapist about what you’re feeling. Sometimes an outside perspective can help you see solutions you can’t spot on your own.
Check in With Yourself Daily
Ask yourself: How am I feeling physically? Emotionally? Mentally? This simple habit can help you catch early signs of burnout.
